A compound curve is where a desktop mill stops. Three axes reach one face at a time, so the part goes out to a machine shop and you wait for it. The TOPFAB TF500 CNC machine on Kickstarter is built to end that trip, putting five-axis motion into a 75kg box that sits on a bench.
The campaign has raised $3,375,359 from 497 backers against a $50,034 goal, with 40 days remaining. Behind it is TOPNC, a five-axis machine tool builder for aerospace, automotive, energy and medical manufacturing that trades on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange main board under 07688.HK.

The TF500 team made a hard call here. After months in development, testing, and back-and-forth with regulators, TOPFAB found that current export-control rules for five-axis CNC equipment (the Dual-Use Items Export Control List, control code 2B201) couldn't clear for individual backers in today's regulatory environment.
They were clear that this has nothing to do with the machine itself, and it's a tough note to write after putting this much work in. It's a tough one to read, too, if you were one of the roughly 500 backers counting down to a machine built for exactly the compound parts a three-axis mill can't reach.

Who Is It For?
People who machine small, detailed parts in aluminium, brass, jade or hardwood and currently send the compound geometry out. It suits the designers and makers in TOPFAB's 3D fabricator programme, and anyone who has hit the ceiling of a three or four-axis mill without wanting to buy floor space to get past it.
Main Strengths
A and C rotary axes join the three linear ones, so compound geometry is finished in one clamping instead of four setups, with positioning rated at ±0.005mm and RTCP at 0.05mm.
An eight-slot automatic tool changer, two more than the nearest desktop five-axis rival, with a vision system that identifies each tool and monitors its wear as the job runs.
Photo to toolpath: an image goes in, a 3D model and a five-axis toolpath come out of the TOPFAB CNC machine, driven from a 7-inch console with no CAD seat and no G-code.
A 60,000 RPM spindle, three times the speed the nearest rival publishes and now rated at 0.65kW, which is what small-diameter finishing cutters need to reach usable surface speed.
One machine covers metals, plastics, jade and hardwood, and steel has joined the published material list, with demonstration parts cut in 7075 aluminium, H59 brass, sandalwood and topaz.
Main Limitations
Five-axis capacity tops out at Φ120 × 100mm, inside a machine occupying 610 × 530 × 504mm and weighing about 90kg.
The Kickstarter account behind the campaign has created no previous projects and backed none, and no CE, FCC or equivalent certification has been published.
The headline accuracy figures, the photo-to-toolpath workflow and the wear detection still have not been demonstrated by anyone outside TOPFAB, even with the campaign now funding.
Is the TOPFAB TF500 CNC Machine on Kickstarter Worth Backing?
Back it if you cut small compound parts and have been waiting for a desktop five-axis machine that automates the whole job rather than just the rotation. The combination is the argument: A/C motion, eight tool slots and a 60,000 RPM spindle, where the nearest comparable machine stops at six tools and 20,000 RPM. Pass if your work is flat or in sheet stock, where three axes do it better for far less, and back the TOPFAB TF500 CNC machine on Kickstarter if it is not.

The tier to plan around is the Basic Package Super Early Bird at $5,999, 33% off the $8,999 MSRP, which covers the TF500 with the basic CNC tooling package, a ten-piece bit set and the standard accessory kit. Anyone who wants more tooling should take the Premium Package Super Early Bird instead, at $6,299 against a $9,599 MSRP, which adds a vacuum cleaner, a premium bit set and aluminium and brass practice stock. Both prices rise once the Super Early Bird allocation sells out.
The only comparable machines in this window are the InfiMaker K1 and the Xmachine WM-100, which Xhorse3D lists at $5,699 with its deposit applied, $300 under TOPFAB's Super Early Bird, with a published 1500W spindle and steel on its material list. They are built for different work: the WM-100 has the torque, while this TOPFAB desktop CNC now matches it on materials, at three times the spindle speed, two more tool slots and a tighter positioning figure, which is what fine finishing in brass, aluminium and hardwood runs on. The TOPFAB TF500 campaign was canceled before shipping; the InfiMaker K1 is the closest currently-funding alternative at true 5-axis capability, starting at $5,199 on Kickstarter.

TOPFAB TF500 CNC Machine on Kickstarter: An Enclosed Desktop Mill With Two Rotary Axes and an AI Front End
The TOPFAB TF500 is a fully enclosed desktop milling machine that adds A and C rotation to the three linear axes, so the tool can meet a workpiece at angles a three-axis machine cannot reach. The whole design points at one outcome: clamp the stock once and take a finished part out, instead of unclamping and re-zeroing between faces. A 7-inch touch console runs it.
The TOPFAB CNC machine measures 610 × 530 × 504mm, and the part it is shown finishing carries 0.4mm walls spaced 2.5mm apart across 50 × 25.7mm, which is the class of work it is built for. The parent company's horizontal five-axis machines run to 5,290mm across, and this is that engineering scaled down to a bench, an unusual direction of travel for a desktop mill.
Why Desktop CNC Stopped Short of the Fifth Axis
Every desktop mill asks the same thing of you: decide which face matters most. Three axes cut from one direction, so a part with features on non-parallel faces comes off the fixture and goes back on for each one. A fourth axis buys one line of rotation, not the ability to tilt the tool, and the geometry that needs tilting is the geometry people give up on and send out.
The fifth axis was never the hard part. Keeping the tool tip on a programmed path while two rotary axes swing underneath it is, and the compensation that requires has lived in machines priced like cars. TOPFAB pairs that control problem with the second one, which is that five-axis toolpaths have belonged to people with a CAM seat and the training to drive it.

A/C Rotary Motion and the Accuracy Claim: One Clamp Instead of Four
Three axes cut one face. Indexed 3+2 adds two rotary axes that lock into position between cuts, reaching more faces but stopping the machine to get there. Continuous five-axis keeps all five moving together, so the tool holds its angle to a curved surface through the whole pass, and that is where this TOPFAB desktop CNC sits.
Positioning is rated at ±0.005mm with 0.005mm repeatability. TOPFAB's live spec sheet quotes 5-axis RTCP accuracy at 0.05mm, up from the 0.02mm figure on the pre-launch page. The RTCP figure is the one to read: it describes how far the tool tip drifts from the programmed path while the rotary axes move, which separates real simultaneous work from indexing dressed up as five-axis. Xhorse3D quotes ±0.01mm positioning accuracy for the WM-100, twice as loose, and neither company's figures have been independently measured.
Photo to Toolpath: The AI CAM Claim Carrying the Most Weight
An image goes in and a toolpath comes out. Photograph an object or pull a model from the built-in library, load tools in any order, and the machine runs through to a finished part from the touchscreen.
This is the boldest thing in the campaign. Building a five-axis toolpath from a photograph means inferring geometry the camera never saw, then resolving collisions across five moving axes, a harder problem than the mechanics underneath it. TOPNC took a 2025 SAIL award at WAIC for a manufacturing language model, so the research behind it is real, but no end-to-end run has been published, and it remains the biggest unproven claim now that the campaign is live.
Eight Tool Slots and Sensor Monitoring: The Unattended-Machining Claim
Eight tools sit in the changer, and a vision system identifies tool type and monitors wear as the job runs, moving from roughing to finishing without an operator. Load the stock, press start, come back to a part. Cutting brass with small cutters, where a worn tool ruins a finish before anyone notices, that monitoring earns its place.
Around it sits a sensor list that belongs on an industrial machine: binocular vision for workpiece recognition, a camera for remote viewing, tool ID, a power meter, temperature and humidity feeding thermal compensation, position sensors for closed-loop control, plus orientation and vibration monitoring. No unattended run length or batch tolerance has been published to go with it.
Working Envelope, Noise and Materials: What Actually Fits
Five-axis capacity tops out at Φ120 × 100mm on a base of 82 × 75mm. That is small, and the specification most likely to rule a buyer out, so measure your own parts against it first. In exchange this TOPFAB desktop CNC sits at a rated 60dB, quiet enough to work alongside, cooled by semiconductor modules rather than fans at up to 30% better efficiency.
Materials run wide for the size. The TOPFAB CNC machine takes aluminium, copper, brass, resin, phenolic board, PE, POM, acrylic, jade and several hardwoods, and the demonstration parts run from 7075 aluminium to sandalwood to topaz. Steel joined the material list at launch, resolving a gap left open on the pre-launch page.
What We Still Don't Know Before Launch
No launch date exists beyond "launching soon", and shipping regions, delivery estimates and production volumes go with it. No CE, FCC or equivalent certification is referenced, there are no warranty terms, and no electrical requirements for a machine somebody has to find room and a socket for.
The reservation mechanics are inconsistent. The deposit is presented as unlocking the Super Early Bird reward and, separately, as a secret link applying a $200 discount, with nothing said about whether the deposit itself is refundable or credited at checkout. Spindle power is the other gap: the published figure is a speed, not the wattage that decides how much metal comes off in a roughing pass.
The largest unknown is independent verification. The accuracy figures, the photo-to-toolpath workflow and the wear detection have not been demonstrated outside TOPFAB, which is normal at this stage and the reason to follow rather than commit.
Should You Back the TOPFAB TF500 on Kickstarter?
TOPFAB approaches desktop CNC from the industrial end. Its parent's ordinary business is machines you walk around rather than sit at, and the TF500 brings those assumptions to a bench: closed loop everywhere, tool monitoring as standard, a spindle chosen for finish rather than headline power.
That is a different proposition from the desktop mills that grew up out of hobby machines. A prototype shop with compact compound parts gets them finished in one clamping instead of quoted out. A model or jewellery maker in brass, jade and hardwood gets a 60,000 RPM spindle, a changer that runs the whole job, and a machine that keeps cutting while nobody watches, which turns five axes from a capability into a workflow.
An industrial parent is the reason to treat this differently from the usual first-time campaign, and with real tiers, published shipping fees and a warranty now in place, most of what was unconfirmed at pre-launch has a real answer.
