What inspired the idea for a microchip-controlled feeder, and how did you turn a personal mealtime challenge into a smart product for pet owners?

This all started at home. A few years back, I had three cats—and one of them, although small, was a total food thief. She kept stealing my other cat’s prescription diet, and it drove me crazy. At that time, there weren’t really any good solutions, so I even tried building a little DIY fix myself.

Fast forward to 2023—I met a few friends who were just as obsessed with solving this problem as I was. We realized RFID technology was the key. So while working our day jobs, we spent almost two years experimenting, failing, and refining. We also studied the pros and cons of the few products that were out there. In the end, we managed to turn a very personal frustration into something much bigger: a feeder that finally stops pets from stealing each other’s food.

Tech That Knows Each Pet

How does the ePawDen Microchip Pet Feeder’s RFID and microchip technology ensure only the right pet gets access to the food?

The idea is simple but powerful. Most pets today already have RFID microchips, so we built on that. If a pet doesn’t have one, we provide a small collar tag. Once paired, it’s like giving the pet VIP access—the feeder recognizes them in seconds and opens. If another pet tries to sneak in, the feeder simply stays shut. It’s quick, accurate, and gives peace of mind that the right pet is always the one eating.

What design decisions helped you keep the feeder silent, lightweight, and easy to move without disturbing pets?

We knew the recognition tech was only half the battle—the feeder also had to be quiet and stress-free. That’s why we created a unique friction-wheel system to move the flap. It’s so smooth and quiet that even the most nervous cats won’t get spooked.

And instead of clunky AA batteries like other products, we chose a rechargeable lithium battery. That way, the feeder is lighter, eco-friendly, and saves owners money in the long run.

Freshness and Cleanliness First

How did you tackle issues like food freshness, airtight sealing, and easy cleaning to keep meals safe and appetizing?

Freshness was a big concern for us. When the flap closes, it seals tightly with our transparent cover, keeping food fresh and odors contained.

We also made cleaning super easy. Both the transparent cover and the flap are removable. The cover lets pets see the food while protecting it on three sides—and it comes included, unlike with some competitors. The flap not only seals the food but, when open, acts as an extra barrier to keep everything tidy. Together, they keep food appetizing and make cleanup simple for owners.

What role did feedback from early testers play in shaping the feeder, and what upgrades or accessories are you planning next?

Our testers were game-changers. They told us things we wouldn’t have thought of ourselves—like whether the feeder needed more weight, non-slip pads, or a stainless steel bowl. We listened carefully, and their feedback shaped many of our final design choices. That’s why we’re planning to bring in at least 20 more testers around the world during our first trial production this October.

As for what’s next—we’ve already mapped out upgrades. The current feeder can evolve into an automatic feeder with one microchip bowl, or even two. We also have fun accessories like decorative cat ears, non-slip feet, and divided stainless steel bowls. And honestly, we’ll keep building based on what pet owners tell us they need—that’s been our biggest secret so far.
