Cataclysm Arcade Kickstarter Boss characters from all four factions

Cataclysm Arcade cards on Kickstarter have already done something most new trading card games only dream about: cross the million dollar mark. With over $1,054,802 raised against a $50,000 goal, 4,708 backers, and 28 days still on the clock, this post-apocalyptic TCG from Mothership Games is not just funding, it is building a community. It is one of the standout tabletop launches currently featured in our top crowdfunding picks this month. The co-founders are Brian David-Marshall, one of the most recognizable names in competitive card gaming, and Jay Van Hoy, a veteran film producer, along with a founding team with deep trading card game experience. And the game has a mechanic that few TCGs are built around from launch: four players can sit down with a single booster pack each and start playing immediately. The pitch is simple, and the numbers show it is working.

Quick Verdict

Who Will Enjoy Cataclysm Arcade TCG

Cataclysm Arcade is for the player who has watched friends bounce off Magic or Pokemon because the barrier to entry felt like homework. It is also for the seasoned collector who wants in early on a game with serious creative pedigree and a design team that clearly knows what it is doing. If you have ever wanted a TCG that works at a kitchen table with whatever packs you just opened, and also supports full constructed competitive play once you have built a collection, this is the rare game that genuinely tries to do both without compromising either.

Main Strengths

  • Full 4-player game from a single booster pack each, no deck building required

  • Officially supported 2 to 4 player formats including free-for-all and team play

  • Post-apocalyptic lore with four distinct factions and a hint of a fifth

  • Founders' Edition Prize Packs with Eric Klug hand-painted originals available

  • Print and Play available now so you can test the Cataclysm Arcade gameplay before backing

  • Companion app for iOS already live, Android coming soon

Possible Drawbacks

  • Mothership Games is a first Kickstarter from a new studio, even with experienced founders

  • Final shipping costs depend on destination and add-ons and are not locked in yet

  • The Apex fifth faction is hinted but not available in the Founders' Edition

Is Cataclysm Arcade Worth Backing?

For anyone interested in getting in on a new TCG at the ground floor, yes. The Founders' Edition is a closed print run and the exclusive content in Cataclysm Arcade Kickstarter tiers will not come back. The $25 entry point is low enough that the risk is minimal, and the game is already playable via Print and Play if you want to try Cataclysm Arcade gameplay before committing.

What Is Cataclysm Arcade On Kickstarter?

The World of Sub-Urbia

The year is 2066, forty years after a catastrophic event called The Cataclysm wiped out civilization as we knew it. What remains of humanity lives underground in the ruins of the New York subway system, a place now called Sub-Urbia. Humans, Synths, Shifters, and Mystics all share this fractured world, and they survive by competing in a brutal bloodsport: The Cataclysm Arcade. A post-apocalyptic fighting league where desperate competitors enter on foot with whatever weapons they could scavenge, hoping to survive long enough to earn food for their families. The Bosses who run the show have armor, training, and every advantage. The challengers have very little. It is a rigged game, and everyone knows it, which is exactly the tension the Cataclysm Arcade card game is built around.

Four Factions Fighting for Survival

The Cataclysm Arcade trading card game is organized around four factions, each with its own identity, lore, and Bosses.

Survivors are the last human beings, no powers, no enhancements, just grit and leadership. Bosses like Sky and Blades, Triumphant represent humans who have found a way to compete despite being outmatched on paper.

Synths are time-displaced cyborgs with no home to return to and nothing to lose. They wield powerful weapons and rebuild themselves from the wreckage of their fallen. The Decommissioner leads the league and is one of the leading Synth Bosses in the Founders' Edition.

Shifters are humans transformed into wereanimals, some driven mad, others empowered. Tryp, Time Lost calls herself a Time Wolf. Seeya Later Gator is exactly what the name implies.

Mystics bring magic into a world that had forgotten it. Mother, May Eye commands tactical spell combinations. Eff with Me Ammo runs a whisker network of rats and grows more dangerous the larger the pack becomes.

And then there is The Apex, a fifth faction only hinted at in the Founders' Edition, with more detail planned for the retail release. It is the kind of lore thread that gives collectors a reason to stay around for the next set.

How to Play Cataclysm Arcade

Open a Pack and You Are Ready

This is the design decision that separates Cataclysm Arcade from most modern TCG launches. Rip open one standard booster pack, put your Boss in play, set aside any token or punch-out cards, shuffle what remains, and that is your deck. Four players, four packs, one game. No deck building. No preparation. No disadvantage for the person who opened fewer packs.

This works because the game is designed around it at a structural level. Resources are not cards you draw into; they are generated automatically each turn based on the current level of play. Running out of cards does not eliminate you. The booster packs are collated specifically to support single-pack play. It is not a gimmick. It is the foundation the entire Cataclysm Arcade gameplay experience is built on.

Turn Structure and the Coin System

Each round is called a Level. At the start of each Level, every player draws a card and receives Coins equal to the current Level number, so the game naturally accelerates as it progresses. Starting with the first player, each participant takes one action or passes. Actions include playing a card from hand, wielding a weapon, attacking with a Boss or Fighter, or activating an ability. When all players have passed, the Level ends and the next player clockwise becomes the first player.

Coins are the engine. Every attack, every ability, every Fighter costs Coins to deploy or activate. Early Levels are tight and deliberate. Later Levels open up into the kind of multi-action turns that make the Cataclysm Arcade gameplay feel like a proper fight escalating toward a finish.

Bosses, Fighters, and How You Win

Every player has one Boss. That Boss has Health, an Attack Cost, an Attack value, and one or more abilities, passive, activated, or attack-based. Fighters are your crew, and they do what Bosses sometimes cannot: die and come back, absorb hits, create openings.

When your Boss runs out of Health, you are out. Last Boss standing wins. In multiplayer formats this creates genuine tension because eliminating the weakest Boss first is not always the right call. A player who looks weak early can still become dangerous as Coins increase each Level.

Cataclysm Arcade Card List and Set Breakdown

Cataclysm Arcade TCG Founders' Edition Prize Pack with four foil cards

What Is in a Founders' Edition Booster Pack

Every Founders' Edition Booster Pack contains 15 cards. One Boss card and that Boss's associated token or rules card, five Commons that play well with that specific Boss, five additional Commons including three Fighters and two other cards, three Uncommons, and one Rare or better. Mythic cards appear in one in every eight packs.

For collectors, the Cataclysm Arcade cards on Kickstarter matter most because this Founders' Edition print run will not return. The full Cataclysm Arcade card list for the Crawling from the Wreckage Founders' Edition set contains 12 Bosses, 66 Commons, 50 Uncommons, 20 Rares, and 7 Mythics. Stretch goals can increase the frequency of Rare and Mythic pulls in Founders' Edition packs.

For constructed play, deck building rules require a minimum 40 card deck plus a Boss, a maximum of three copies of any card, and a maximum of two factions including the Boss's faction.

Rarity System, Prize Packs, and Eric Klug Alters

Rarity runs Common, Uncommon, Rare, Mythic, and Promo. Every sealed Founders' Edition Booster Display includes one Prize Pack, a four-card foil pack that can contain alt-art treatments, hand-drawn sketch cards, and in two specific Prize Packs across the entire print run, redemption certificates for original hand-painted cards by Eric Klug.

Klug is known in the TCG world for transforming cards into collector pieces. Cataclysm Arcade includes four of his commissioned alters in the Founders' Edition, with reproductions available only in Prize Packs and the two originals hiding somewhere in the print run. You need to back at Booster Display tier or higher to have a shot at finding one.

Cataclysm Arcade Price on Kickstarter and Pledge Levels

The entry point is accessible. The Scrapper tier at $25 includes four Founders' Edition Booster Packs and four Variant Art Exclusive Boss Cards, everything needed for a four-player game night. Early Bird pricing is gone but the value is still strong.

The Brawler tier at $99 steps up to 12 packs, four Alt-Art Boss Cards, and a GameHead playmat, enough for three four-player games or a Pack Master event where each player adds a booster to their deck each round. From the Rising Star tier at $185, every pledge includes at least one Founders' Edition Booster Display and therefore one Prize Pack, which is the only way to access the exclusive foil and collector content.

Higher tiers scale to half-case and full-case bundles with playmats, deck boxes, and sleeves from Heavy Play and GameHead across all four factions. The Contender tier at $1,100 and above unlocks Metal Boss Cards. The Haymaker at $3,250 and End Boss at $5,999 include free shipping and represent the collector and store-owner tiers with maximum stretch goal content.

The Cataclysm Arcade Kickstarter also offers booster displays, Prize Packs, playmats, deck boxes, and faction sleeves as add-ons. Add-ons let backers at any tier pick up extra Booster Displays at $140 each, Boss vs Boss playmats, faction sleeves, or the full accessory bundle at $690.

Fulfillment begins Mid-Q4 2026 for early backers, Late-Q4 2026 for all others.

Why Cataclysm Arcade Stands Out as a Trading Card Game

Most trading card games ask you to invest before you play. Build a deck first. Buy singles. Research the meta. Cataclysm Arcade flips that. The cataclysm arcade gameplay starts the moment you open a pack, and the design is explicit about it: this is not a watered-down limited format. It is the actual game, played with the actual cards from the same booster packs that go into constructed decks.

That decision has editorial attention. Polygon covered the Cataclysm Arcade card game three times before the campaign ended. Good Time Society tested single-pack play on camera. AIPT Comics called it a breakout TCG at GAMA Expo 2026. Screen Rant flagged it as the MTG veteran's new project worth watching.

Brian David-Marshall spent years at the center of organized competitive Magic. The game he has built is not trying to compete with Magic on Magic's terms. It is trying to solve the problem that makes most people walk away from TCGs before they ever get started: the cost and complexity of getting to the table in the first place. The challenge will be keeping that accessibility intact as the competitive scene grows.

Should You Back Cataclysm Arcade on Kickstarter?

Cataclysm Arcade cards on Kickstarter represent something that does not come along often in the TCG space: a game with a genuinely novel design premise, a founding team with deep trading card game experience, and enough press momentum to suggest the broader community is paying attention. Crossing a million dollars on a $50,000 goal is not noise. That is a signal.

The risks are real. Mothership Games is a new studio running its first Kickstarter campaign. Fulfillment is targeted for Q4 2026 and like any complex physical product, delays are possible. Shipping costs are estimated but not final. These are standard crowdfunding caveats and the team has been transparent about them, which counts for something.

What you are backing is access to a closed print run that will not come back. The Founders' Edition exclusive content, the Prize Packs, the Eric Klug originals, the foil alt-art Bosses, none of it returns after this campaign. For a collector or a competitive player who wants to be in at the beginning of something, this Cataclysm Arcade Kickstarter is the moment. The Print and Play is free and available now if you want to test the game before the campaign closes.
