When a lockdown passion project meets the creator of the Cyberpunk universe himself, something special is bound to emerge. Cyberpunk Legends is a narrative-driven card game that fuses RPG storytelling with quick, accessible gameplay — a mix that has captivated both tabletop fans and newcomers.

We spoke with the creator behind the project to learn how this ambitious campaign evolved from a homemade prototype into an officially licensed adventure through the gritty streets of Night City.

From Prototype to Partnership

Cyberpunk Legends began as a personal project before Mike Pondsmith himself encouraged you to adapt it into the Cyberpunk universe. Can you walk us through that journey and how the game evolved from a prototype to a full-fledged licensed campaign?

Sure! I started building this during the pandemic; I was looking for something to play with my friends when lockdown ended — a campaign game we could enjoy over several sessions. But a lot of my friends didn’t have the time for big-box setups. When nothing fit the bill, I decided to make it myself.

When the pandemic ended, I was playing it with Mike (we’ve known each other for a long time), and he suggested turning it into a Cyberpunk game. That changed everything — I began assembling a team, refining the design, handling manufacturing, and transforming a simple idea into a complete project.

RPG Depth, Card Game Simplicity

You’ve described Cyberpunk Legends as combining the feel of an RPG with the accessibility of a card game. What design choices allowed you to preserve strong narrative storytelling without overwhelming players with setup or rules?

One advantage of being a card game is that we don’t need to front-load all the rules. Players can jump straight into the action and learn as they go.

The player with the leader token draws and reads from the scenario deck, immersing the group in the story. We also added tabletalk rules that mimic chaotic firefights — you can say anything you want, except what’s literally on your cards. It pushes players to improvise, role-play, and communicate creatively, adding a sense of realism and fun to every session.

Cyberpunk Legends: Becoming Legends

The “Young Legends” decks let players experience icons like Blackhand and Bartmoss at the start of their journeys. Why was it important to explore their early stories, and how does that perspective shape gameplay?

Cyberpunk Legends is set in 2012, the dawn of the Cyberpunk timeline. It’s a key moment before massive events reshape the world. We wanted to give players the chance to live through that history — and for newcomers, it’s the perfect entry point.

By letting fans play early versions of iconic characters, we’ve made decks that feel familiar yet distinct. The Eurodyne deck plays like the Rocker deck… only more so. Each character has flavor and focus that adds personality to the gameplay.

Fast Setup, Long-Term Depth

Cyberpunk Legends promises a 10-minute learning curve but also multiple modes like roguelike deckbuilding and narrative campaigns. How did you ensure the game remains quick to pick up while offering long-term depth for dedicated players?

We kept 90% of the rules consistent between modes — it’s the encounters that change.

Gauntlet Mode, the roguelike variant, unlocks after players complete the main campaign. That gives newcomers time to learn the ropes before diving into advanced play. For those who love replayability, it offers endless combinations while staying fast and familiar.

Building the Future of Night City

With booster boxes, accessories, and future expansions teased, what is your long-term vision for Cyberpunk Legends, and how do you see the community shaping the ongoing development of this series?

This Kickstarter is just the beginning. We’re planning new scenarios every 3 months and new campaigns every year. The goal is for the cards you buy now to stay relevant for years to come.

What excites us most is giving players the tools to build their own adventures — a streamlined way to tell their own stories in the Cyberpunk universe without the heavy lift of a full TTRPG.

Talking with the team behind Cyberpunk Legends feels like peering into the next evolution of tabletop storytelling — where narrative, accessibility, and fan creativity merge into one living world. What began as a pandemic prototype is now a fully licensed card-driven saga with the blessing of Mike Pondsmith himself.

For fans of Cyberpunk RED, 2077, or anyone craving a faster, story-rich tabletop experience, Cyberpunk Legends offers a thrilling new way to walk the streets of Night City — and maybe, become a legend yourself.
